Ms. Heidi Carson
My name is Heidi Carson and I have been the special education social worker at SPMA since 2003. I received my Bachelor of Social Work from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, MN in 1993 and my Masters of Social Work from the University of Minnesota in 2002. My previous work experience includes working with both adults and children with mental health needs in both community and residential settings. I currently live at home with my husband and 3 children, ages 17, 14, and 9. In my free-time I enjoy walking in nature, reading, and spending time with my friends and family.
Being a school social worker has given me a unique opportunity to develop authentic relationships both with the students I serve as well as their caregivers. I am able to work hand in hand with caregivers and students in a positive proactive way to promote school success behaviors that enhance learning. During social skills groups some of the areas we work on include: friendship skills, problem-solving skills, building self-confidence, self-advocacy, increasing frustration tolerance, appropriate expression of feelings, and conflict resolution. Students learn these skills through direct teaching, modeling, role-playing, and therapeutic games and lessons. Being able to talk about and practice how to solve problems in a private or small group setting allows students to build the confidence they need to use these skills in the classroom and the community. I feel privileged and honored to serve your children.
